Book Review

Algorithms to Live By is a really insightful book into the world of computer science. It effectively explores the level of logic and detail that underpins the functioning of modern technology,and quite impressively shows how the years of research into this can be applied to our lives. Griffiths discusses a variety of subject areas, ranging from Networking to Game Theory, and in each of these chapters he fully explains their origins and how our society can become “optimal” by incorporating these ideas. Throughout the book Griffiths takes some scientifically controversial standpoints, and later goes on to strengthen these views which adds an interesting element to the book. From reading this I began to appreciate the science behind the decisions we make in our lives and also how, quite often, we naturally make optimum choices. I also learnt a lot about how our society is designed around the discoveries made from computer science.
